Why Start an Executive Search Franchise
I asked my buddies over at Searchpath why should someone start an Executive search franchise. Here’s what they came back with:
➢ Increasing desire of professionals to own their own business coupled with Explosion of Talent Acquisition Industry makes franchising a ripe choice
CLEVELAND, Nov. 9, 2007 – As the war for talent escalates, the need for high-performing search consultants to help companies manage their talent acquisition needs is growing exponentially. Those fortunate enough to have an established search firm are experiencing one of the best markets in recent history. If considering opening a firm, the timing could not be better. It is a great time to be a search consultant.
There are three traditional avenues available to those in the industry or considering entering search. The first is to work for an established firm. Due the high demand for services, most organizations within the staffing and recruiting industry are aggressively hiring talent. This option is how most people begin their careers in Talent Acquisition.
The next option is to simply start a search firm as an independent. This can be a bit risky, but there is a wealth of resources that make this a very real option for the true entrepreneur.
The final option is to join an established franchise organization. Some of the largest and most successful search organizations are built on this type of platform. There are more than 1,500 search firms throughout the world that are affiliated with a franchise and they cover searches ranging from entry level sales and management professionals to CEOs.
The increasing desire of people in all walks of life to own their own businesses has led to an explosion in the franchise industry. In the past, most franchise organizations were in the fast food and hospitality industries, but this has dramatically changed. The options are endless and cover almost every conceivable type of business. The major reasons to join a franchise organization are income control, lifestyle flexibility, and a desire to build something for themselves and their families. But the greatest advantage to being a part of a franchise organization rather than starting a business from scratch is that owning a franchise allows you to be in business for yourself without actually doing it all alone.
Joining the rapidly evolving and growing talent acquisition industry has many appeals. High income potential, the freedom to work just about anywhere in the world and the ability to build on industry knowledge and established networks to impact both companies and candidates in a very positive way are just a few of the considerations. Finally, the flexibility of the business model and the extremely low start-up cost allows for many options ranging from a home office to a large, multiple-location business.
Whether you are an owner of an executive search firm, an experienced recruiter thinking of opening your own firm or a seasoned executive considering entering the industry, joining a franchise organization is worth consideration.
The following outlines some of the differences between the three business platforms:
1. Working for an established search firm:
Benefits:
• Security of a base salary or a draw, plus commissions, and usually some level of benefits.
• Daily interaction for training, support and motivation.
• Existing brand and an established reputation build credibility with clients and candidates.
• An office, a computer and a database are usually provided.
Considerations:
• Total payout is significantly lower than the other two options - usually almost 50% less.
• As an employee, lifestyle flexibility is greatly limited.
• Some companies require new employees to sign restrictive agreements that limit options if ownership is an eventual goal.
2. Opening an office as an independent:
Benefits:
• 100% retention of all revenue.
• Ability to be completely free of any operational or procedural control.
• It is a true entrepreneur adventure and you will be able to build your office your way.
Considerations:
• The challenge of building the systems and support from scratch.
• Start-up costs, though minimal, are 100% your responsibility.
• The lack of support could lengthen ramp-up time.
3. Joining a franchise organization:
Benefits:
• An established operational support system that has already developed training programs and systems reducing the learning curve and ramp-up time.
• Leveraged purchasing power for products and services.
• Ability to focus on revenue generation while letting the system handle non-revenue activities.
• Ability to be completely free of any operational or procedural control.
• Being in business for yourself and not by yourself.
Considerations:
• Upfront investment and ongoing royalty payments.
• Most organizations require a minimum time commitment and some have very limiting post-termination restrictions.
• Ongoing operational considerations and growth opportunities may be limited.
In summary, if the decision is made to enter the world of executive search then take the time to determine the best route for you. Identify your ultimate destination and find the best path to get there in a comfortable time frame. Joining a franchise organization is a big commitment and can be a very positive relationship, but it is not for everyone.
